Transfusion Guidelines for Blood Components

The Methodist Hospital Transfusion Guidelines were approved by the Medical Executive Committee in 2007 at the recommendation of the Blood Utilization Committee. The guidelines are for your reference when determining your patient’s transfusion requirements. They are based on clinical practice guidelines of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and the American Red Cross.  The Blood Utilization Committee will use these guidelines when auditing patient charts for appropriate transfusion of blood, platelets and frozen plasma. As Medical Director of the Methodist Hospital Transfusion Service and Blood Conservation Program, I am available to answer your questions and for consultation related to the transfusion service.
